Since creation and beyond, there has been an exponential change in man while Yahweh has remained the same. He has attributes that are incredibly difficult for the finite mind to grasp, and we are going to see what we can do about that.
Part one of this three-part adventure will cover the attributes of God, part two, the fallen man, and part three, the gospel of Christ. The idea of this lesson is to bring us together, develop a common goal and enhance our relationship with our Creator. We will begin each lesson with a model prayer followed by a short lesson and completed with a memory verse that pertains to the lesson. Last but certainly not least, the lesson taker will put together a short thesis at the end on what the culmination of those attributes means to him or her.
The basis for this 18-part attribute lesson is coming from ‘The Knowledge of the Holy’ by A.W. Tozer and we will be avoiding words like trait, characteristic or quality as those more aptly define the creature rather than the Creator. Furthermore, today’s society has brought God down to our level, calling Him papa, co-pilot, the man upstairs, the boss…, resulting in a failed understanding of His holiness and majesty. This lesson is meant to strengthen our relationship with Him and improve our spiritual condition. The best that we can do is derive words that help us entertain the magnitude of His being. In Romans 1:21 Paul says “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart was darkened”. We shall try to be better than that.
We have a difficult time putting together a thought process that encapsulates the being of God and so we speak of Him in a manner that we can understand. In the book of Ezekiel, we see the terms “likeness”, “as it were”, “appearance”, and even “the likeness of the appearance”, because there is no one word that can describe the holy Father. He need not supersede one attribute to exercise another, there for all of God does all that God does at all times. Did you get that? While His name, nature and appearance may be incomprehensible, through divine inspiration and the God-man Jesus Christ He has revealed to us His attributes, so we shall pursue Job 22:21 which says “acquaint yourself with Him and be at peace”.
